Parts of Coventry city centre were sealed off by police after shots were fired at a man and hit a taxi.

Three shots were fired from a handgun that hit a taxi in the Palmer Lane and Trinity Street area at about 0320 BST, West Midlands Police said.

No-one was injured but Hales Street, Trinity Street and Fairfax Street were closed to pedestrians and traffic.

A man was arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

It is thought the shots were fired following a dispute between three males at the Club Release night club in Burges, Coventry, which spilled out into the street, police said.

Det Insp Darren Lee said the person taking aim was firing at a man, but missed and only a black taxi cab was damaged.

He added: "It's extremely unusual for anything like this to happen in Coventry City Centre."

Anyone who was in Club Release or the Palmer Lane or Trinity Street area in the early hours of Sunday is urged to contact police or call Crimestoppers anonymously.
