Hi Hopper,

Believe it or not we have buses running on cooking oil down here. Don't know of any Taxis though

know a load of private owned cars got done for converting cooking oil into fuel in wales which a few years ago.

its said you could smell them coming as the smell of the exhaust fumes was like a chip shop

Yep, you are right it smells of a chip shop but that is not all that smells around here is it  LOL

Hi, i know a lot of taxi drivers in south tyneside who are using bio-diesel ( cleaned up chip fat oil ) your car will smoke a bit on warm up, you loose a couple of miles per gallon and performance isn't so good. Thats the downside, at 80p per litre it's worth the sacrafices. That's from a vat registered supplier who pays all the duty on it so the customs and excise can't touch your car. If you want to put clean oil in then there are modifications you need do. the mods are available on the internet.If you use yout own oil you will have to pay vat on it otherwise they will impound your car

It is NOT illegal to use cooking oil in your car !!!!!!!!!!

As of July 1st 2007, using vegetable oil in your car is completely legal and tax free, providing you use less than 2500 litres a year. Therefore, there is no reason why everyone who owns a diesel-engined vehicle shouldn't use some oil

If you exceed 2500 Litres per year ( 105 ) 20L drums then you are liable to pay duty on the ammount OVER 2500 L only....

See for yourself...Here is the official email I have just recieved direct from customs.
Yes I rang them to double check, and make sure the 2500 rule was still in force.

Follow up to Revenue & Customs Brief 37/07 on Biofuels Simplification

  • Revenue & Customs Brief 37/07

issued on 19 April 2007 confirmed that the following changes applying to biofuel producers were to be introduced:

  • A production threshold of 2,500 litres per annum below which producers will not need to enter premises, submit returns or pay duty, and
  • A reduction in the frequency of returns for all but the largest producers (defined as those producing over 450,000 litres per annum) from monthly to quarterly.

We can now confirm that these measures will be introduced on 30 June 2007.

What will small producers have to do?

All registered producers are being sent a return as usual for the month of June. Those we think likely to be below the production threshold over the next 12 months are receiving a letter with this return. The letter asks them to declare whether they expect to produce more or less than 2,500 litres in the coming year. They should complete the declaration at the foot of the letter and send it back along with their completed return by the due date.

Those who declare that they expect to produce less will be deregistered and will not receive any further returns. We will refer to producers operating below the threshold as “exempt” producers. They must, however, contact us to enter their premises if they subsequently exceed 2,500 litres in a 12 month period, or if, at any time, they expect to exceed this amount within the next 12 months. Exempt producers are also required to keep simple production records (date of production and quantity produced, in litres) on an ongoing basis, and retain these for six years. Production levels should be checked at the end of each month. If they find that they need to enter their premises, they should contact the HMRC National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000.

Those who declare that they expect to produce more than 2,500 litres over the next 12 months will remain registered and will receive quarterly returns, the first one being for the quarter 1 July to 30 September 2007.
Subsequent quarterly returns will be issued for the periods 1 October to 31 December; 1 January to 31 March and 1 April to 30 June. Returns will be issued and should be received in the last month of the quarter (September, December, March and June) for completion and payment by the due dates, which will be no later than the fifteenth day (or the last business day before the fifteenth day) of October, January, April and July.

 

Queries should be directed to the National Advice Service (NAS) on 0845 010 9000, quoting the number of this Brief.

What will medium-sized producers have to do?

Producers of between 2,500 and 450,000 litres per annum should complete their return for the period ending 30 June as normal. The next return they receive will be for the period from 1 July to 30 September.

A medium-sized producer who expects to produce less than 2,500 litres in the next twelve months should contact the NAS at the number above and we will arrange for them to be deregistered. Medium-sized producers who become large producers, due to an increase in production, will be contacted by HMRC to arrange for their transfer from quarterly to monthly returns.

What will large producers have to do?

Producers of over 450,000 litres per annum will remain on monthly returns. A large producer who has produced less than this amount in the last twelve months, and who expects to produce less than this amount in the next twelve months, should write in with details to HM Revenue and Customs, Mineral Oil Relief Centre, Dobson House, Regent Centre, Newcastle NE3 3PF.

Further guidance

We will update Public Notice 179E: Biofuels and other fuel substitutes to reflect the changes outlined in this Brief as soon as possible. Until then, please treat this Brief as superseding the current edition of this Notice where the two are in conflict.

I use straight vegetable oil "new oil, fresh, uncooked" as fuel ( well mixed in with diesel ).
You know to help the cost of fuel.
I do not use it all the time but now and again. I use about a 30% SVO to 70% diesel.

And I never exceed the 2500L limit.

You can buy kits to make it into bio diesel but I have not got one.
I just tip it in the tank along with my diesel and it mixes just fine.
NO bad starting on a 30% mix....summer time you can up the % a bit more.

Some cars love it like the pug XUD engines and some hate it...
I run a vauxhall zafirra now 2.0 dti with no probs.

Let us see what others use and what mixes suite different car makes.

I tried using biodiesel in my citroen dispatch and had problems with water in the fuel so didn't bother again. I know a friend who uses a mix of cooking oil and diesel in his land rover and it goes really well, but it stinks a bit.

I've recently tried cooking oil in my new taxi , mixing it 50/50 with diesel and it runs fine, but th exhaust smells a bit round town. The only trouble is, the supermarkets have realised its being used as fuel and have hiked the price right up so its the same price as diesel almost.So its really not worth using it any more.
Its about time this country had a massive protest and brought the entire country to a halt to get this robbing government to do somethingabout the stupid prices we are forced to pay for road fuel. The french do it all the time, but this country has no backbone, they just roll over and get trampled on by the greedy treasury dept. The cost of everything is affected by fuel prices, lets do something about it for god sake!

we have quite a few e7's down in chelmsford running on bio fuel. not heard of any problems though i even run my eurotaxi on the stuff. make sure you've got at least a quaurter of a tank on normal derv in your tank to mix.

not sure... i think it is ok in the summer but in the winter the fuel is much more viscous and my brother reckons it causies him trouble... I can't afford to be without my cab so I don't take the risk
