Why exactly to taxis use 2-way radios to talk to the dispatcher? Is there any reason not to use a mobile phone? Is the reception or price an issue?

What are the boxes called that list jobs and such like, which seem to have replaced most radio usage anyway? I've heard names like Data Dispatch Unit and such but there doesn't seem to be any name that everyone uses.

Mobile phones freak out pax, even with a bluetooth headset. Plus many consider it rude. A radio will only require you to say 'ok' or something, not the whole waiting-for-controller-to-pick-up. Also reception can be an issue.

Most of the cabs my way use PDA's with specialist software. The one I use is by Cordic. Is ideal really, your calls are infront of you in text, so you can't really forget any of their details. Most will allow you to press a nav button, so it will tell you how to get to them/their destination if you're operating out of your normal zone. Also, they will do ringback (and some will SMS the customer with your car information). You can also send your own messages or preset messages (usually) with just a few screen taps.

The most important feature is that there is usually an SOS button. These units are fitted with GPS, so pressing that button sets off alarm bells in the dispatch office, and they can get another cab to follow you (or call the police).

There are other PDA-based systems other than Cordic, can't remember the last one I used, though. You'll find each cab company will be using a different system from the last - it depends on the package they get from the operator, what's cheapest, etc.

Thanks. That's a bit disappointing actually, I have a PDA based system in mind. I'm not sure if there's any mileage in it though.
