POLICE, taxi chiefs and Calderdale Council have vowed to act together to halt the violence affecting the district's cabbies.
During a meeting at Halifax police station, action was promised to help protect taxi drivers.
The talks were arranged following a recent wave of violent attacks.
Sultan Mahmood, secretary of the Calderdale Private Hire Association, said: "It was a very encouraging meeting and important for us all to help drivers as best we can.
"Some of these measures could make a real difference and anything that increases our safety is fantastic news."
After more than an hour of discussions it was agreed to provide extra crime prevention measures and for the Private Hire Association to make the first steps towards funding CCTV cameras in cars.
Acting Chief Insp Tony Nicholson, of Calderdale police, told the meeting protecting taxi drivers has been a police priority for more than a year.
He said: "The problems these drivers face has been very well publicised but it didn't come as a surprise.
"There has to be a shared responsibility between all of us to put a stop to these attacks."
The increased safety measures, funded by Calderdale Council and police, include posters, a new safety booklet and letters from the police and Calderdale Council to be distributed to all firms.
New low cost safety measures for all private hire drivers were also agreed.
As reported in the Courier, following a Freedom of Information request, at least one driver is attacked in Calderdale every week.
The most recent was Amjad Farooq, 35, who was left for dead after being beaten unconscious, robbed, and dumped bleeding at the side of the road in Luddenden.
