To gain public awareness of the de-limitation problems faced in many areas a bill board van has been produced to get the message across. The van is working in the Stockport and Salford areas of Greater Manchester and covers the main drags of both towns, visits the ranks and more importantly circles the Town Hall and civil buildings. Both areas are looking at de-limitation, in fact Stockport is de-limited at the moment but awaiting the result of a second more correct consultation that the trade hopes will give them a result that will not leave them facing financial ruin. Salford is looking at the “results” of its own in house surveys whilst the trade are pushing for the council to commission an Independent survey which has been funded by the trade over the last three years via licensing fees.
Steve Darlington Chairman of the Stockport owner drivers association says that putting the issue in the public eye should lead to more contact and discussion between the trade and council committees, hopefully the more contact we have will increase the knowledge councillors have of the trade and will lead them to make much more informed decisions. The van is an ideal way of getting the public on our side with an estimated 1000 responses so far received by Stockport licensing in the course of the current consultation. Steve implores all drivers and owners in both areas to keep lobbying and speaking to councillors and committee; we are all fighting for our livelihoods better to have a manageable number of decent jobs rather than an unknown quantity of worthless jobs. The van was donated by Future Outdoor Media Ltd for which S.O.D.A and the Salford Trade are grateful.
