CCTV cameras for Blackburn and Darwen taxis

CCTV cameras are set to be installed in more than a dozen taxis in Blackburn and Darwen to combat a tide of violent and racist attacks.

More than 140 crimes, including robberies, racist abuse, assault and criminal damage, have been recorded in the borough in a year, councillors have been told.

In addition there are reports of problems with customers making off without paying.

And now 13 drivers have volunteered to take part in a pilot scheme where miniature CCTV cameras will be fitted inside private hire and hackney carriage vehicles, to offer more protection' for cabbies.

A council licensing spokesman said: "The implementation of the scheme would present a real opportunity not only to increase the detection rate of violent crime offences but to deter the commission of the offences in the first place.

"Drivers who continually suffer from incidents of racial abuse, criminal damage, assault, fares making off without payment and general drunken anti-social behaviour would feel safer."

Customers would also feel safer too, according to licensing chiefs.

An initial pilot scheme will cost the local authority around £8,000 - and the drivers taking part will also make an individual financial contribution.

Under the terms of the scheme a code of conduct will be drafted so that the maintenance and operation of the equipment is covered.

An investigation is currently ongoing as to the best prospective supplier. Any system would have to conform with Home Office regulations and provide footage capable of being used for evidential purposes in courts.

New signage, alerting passengers to the CCTV operation, will now need to be ordered.

The proposals are expected to be rubberstamped by the borough council's licensing committee next Thursday.

Hi Baron

Just for the record Xtron will be the company supplying the CCTV to Blackburn and Darwen. I must say a great job by the licensing team there. They have invested in the best product on the market.
