Taxi wardens are facing the chop

One of the city's busiest nightspots is set to lose its taxi wardens prompting fears of an increase in violent flashpoints.
Funding is fast running out for the two wardens who organise cabs for clubbers outside the Xscape during the weekend.

The civilised system of queueing outside Oceana may be replaced by more chaotic scenes in the summer if clubbers are left to compete for taxis in the street.

The city's Community Safety Partnership is calling on venues around the area to contribute funds to keep the scheme running.

Partnership joint-chairman, Irene Henderson, who masterminded the warden scheme, said: "Between 35-40,000 young people descend on the city at the weekend.

The clubs and pubs are cleaning up and they should contribute to the cost.

People are not terribly keen to put their hands in their pockets. Despite our best efforts, the scheme is going to fold and that will have knock-on effects."

The marshall scheme is funded by a £28,000 grant issued by the Home Office and has been running for the past six months.

Two wardens ensure that clubbers wait their turn to get a

taxi, cutting down the risk of a drunken argument flaring up and resulting in violence.

"At the moment there is an orderly retreat from the city centre," continued Mrs Henderson.

"It would be a real loss if we go back to the unfortunate times we have experienced before."

One regular clubber described the difference the wardens made in the area at the weekend.

"Before the wardens you would come out and people would be milling around waiting for taxis in different places.

"Lots would be walking down the main road trying to flag one down. The marshall makes sure that you go in the queue, which takes a long time and can be quite frustrating."

A police spokesman added: "The Community Safety Partnership, which includes the police, MK Council, PCT and Bucks Fire and Rescue Service as well as other local groups, is working hard to establish sustainable funding for the scheme."
