THE FIRST Crawley cabbie to have his car fitted with council-funded CCTV Supplied by Xtron after being seen in Taxi-Today's June Issue has hailed the scheme as a lifesaver - and thanked the Crawley News.
John Fraser, secretary of the Crawley Licensed Cab Drivers' Association, displayed his XTRON CCTV camera-fitted Skoda out-side the Town Hall last Friday.
The unveiling marked a triumph for the ongoing News campaign for greater cabbie protection through in-car CCTV.
Mr Fraser said: "Three cab drivers across the UK were killed in May alone.Taxi owners get attacked way too much.
"Apart from being in the armed forces it's the most dangerous job you can have. CCTV in cabs will stop attacks on town drivers and I'm proud to have the first one.
"I would like to thank Crawley Council for their super efforts and the News for being the paper that backed our campaign all the way."
Crawley Council have funds to provide 19 more late-night cab drivers with a £250 grant for their CCTV - and are urging those interested to get in touch.
Councillor Keith Blake was at the Town Hall, on The Boulevard, to give his support.
Mr Blake said: "This will be of great benefit to taxi drivers in the town and their passengers.
"CCTV ensures that any assaults are recorded and presented to the police to ensure a successful prosecution.
"I urge more taxi drivers to get in touch with the council to take advantage of this funding and help make Crawley a safer place."
